Moving to the Costa da Morte: Complete checklist for your relocation
Prepare Your Move to the Costa da Morte Step by Step
Moving to a new place always involves a mountain of paperwork. When the destination is the Costa da Morte, the stunning surroundings more than make up for any bureaucratic effort. This complete checklist will help you organize every detail.
1. Municipal Registration (Empadronamiento)
Your first mandatory step. Empadronamiento links you officially to your municipality and is required for healthcare, school enrollment, and voting. Apply at your local Concello (Town Hall):
- Concello de Corcubión: Plaza de la Constitución, 1.
- Concello de Cee: Praza do Rosario, 1.
- Concello de Fisterra: Rúa Castelao, 3.
Bring your DNI/NIE, rental contract or property deed, and a recent utility bill. The process is free and usually completed the same day.
2. School Enrollment for Your Children
The Galician education system guarantees public school places. Key centers include:
- Primary schools (CEIP): Available in Corcubión, Cee, Fisterra, Camariñas, and Muxía.
- Secondary schools (IES): IES de Corcubión and IES A Xunqueira de Cee cover secondary education and bachillerato.
- Nursery (0-3 years): Public nurseries in Cee and Corcubión with income-based fees.
Tip: Contact the Concello before moving to check availability at your nearest school.
3. Healthcare Registration
To access Galicia's public healthcare (SERGAS), obtain your Tarjeta Sanitaria Individual (TSI) at the Centro de Saúde de Cee or your local health center. Bring your empadronamiento, DNI/NIE, and Social Security card.
The Hospital Virxe da Xunqueira in Cee is the regional reference hospital with 24-hour emergency services, maternity, and all basic specialties.
4. Utilities: Water, Electricity, Waste
Water
Managed by Agua de Galicia (public company). Average monthly cost: €20-35.
Electricity
The Spanish electricity market is liberalized. Choose from Iberdrola, Endesa, Repsol, Holaluz, etc. You'll need the property's CUPS code. New connection costs around €170-220.
Waste Collection
Managed by Udara. Annual fee: €60-120, paid through your Concello.
5. Internet and Telecommunications
- Fiber optic: Available in Cee, Corcubión, and Fisterra through Movistar, Vodafone, and Digi. Up to 600 Mbps.
- Satellite/4G: Starlink or 4G operators for more isolated rural areas (50-150 Mbps).
Recommendation: Check exact coverage at your address before committing to a property.
6. Moving from Abroad: Additional Steps
- Vehicle registration: 30 days for EU vehicles. Non-EU imports at the A Coruña Traffic Office.
- Driving licence: EU licences valid for 2 years. Non-EU holders may need to exchange or test.
- Social Security: Self-employed workers must register with RETA. European pensioners should request form S1.
7. Useful Local Services
- Public libraries: Free with Wi-Fi in Cee, Corcubión, and Fisterra.
- Post offices: In all main urban centers.
- Notaries: In Cee and Fisterra.
- Banks: Caixabank, Abanca, and Santander have branches in Cee.
- Public transport: Monbus connects daily to Santiago, A Coruña, and main towns.
