Schools and Education on Costa da Morte: A Guide for Families with Children

Education on Costa da Morte: a guide for families

If you're considering moving to the Costa da Morte with your family, one of the first questions will be about your children's education. The good news is that Galicia has a high-quality public education system, and the Costa da Morte offers sufficient educational options for early childhood, primary and secondary education, all in an incomparable natural setting.

Living on the Costa da Morte means raising your children in an environment where nature, safety and community are part of daily life. Children grow up playing on wild beaches, exploring forests, learning about the sea and living in a community where everyone knows each other.

The Spanish education system: the basics

  • Early Childhood Education (0-6 years): Non-compulsory. First cycle (0-3) in nurseries; second cycle (3-6) free in public centres.
  • Primary Education (6-12 years): Compulsory, 6 years divided into 3 cycles.
  • Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) (12-16 years): Compulsory, 4 years.
  • Bachillerato (16-18 years): Non-compulsory, 2 years with specialisations.
  • Vocational Training: Practical alternative to bachillerato.

Schools on the Costa da Morte

Cee: CEIP Monte Cabalar (infant and primary) and IES Costa da Morte (ESO and Bachillerato) are the main centres. The IES offers quality secondary education with small class sizes enabling personalised attention.

Corcubión: CEIP Sincreto de Xesto covers infant and primary education. For ESO, students attend the IES in Cee, just 3 km away.

Fisterra: CEIP Virxe do Mar (infant and primary) and IES Fisterra (ESO). Favourable student-teacher ratios allow more individualised attention than in large cities.

Muxía: CEIP Alcalde Feixó and IES A Granxa provide complete educational coverage.

Vimianzo, Camariñas, Laxe: Each municipality has its own CEIP and most have an IES for ESO.

Advantages of the rural educational environment

Low student-teacher ratio: Classes typically have 15-20 students, allowing teachers to know each student individually.

Safe environment: Children can walk to school, play in the street and enjoy freedom unthinkable in a big city.

Connection with nature: Schools incorporate outdoor activities, school gardens, beach outings and environmental projects into the curriculum.

Educational community: In small towns, the relationship between families and teachers is close and collaborative.

Bilingual education and Galician

Galicia has a bilingual education system where Galician and Spanish are co-official languages. Children receive education in both languages, giving them natural bilingual competence. English is introduced from the first years of primary school, and many centres offer bilingual sections in English.

For families from outside Galicia or abroad, immersion in Galician is rarely a problem: children adapt quickly, and bilingualism is a proven cognitive and professional advantage.

Extracurricular activities

  • Sports: Football, basketball, surfing, sailing, swimming, martial arts.
  • Music: Traditional Galician music school offers bagpipe, tambourine and other instrument classes.
  • Maritime activities: Sailing, kayaking and surfing schools.
  • Languages: English and other language academies.
  • Art: Ceramics, painting and craft workshops organised by town halls.

Education for foreign children

Spain's education system facilitates integration of foreign students. Public schools accept children of any nationality at no cost, with language support programmes available. For EU/EEA citizens, minimal documentation is needed. International school options exist in nearby cities: A Coruña (80 km) and Santiago de Compostela (75 km).

University and higher education

  • University of Santiago de Compostela (USC): 75 km away, one of Spain's best universities.
  • University of A Coruña (UDC): 80 km away.
  • UNED: Distance learning university accessible from anywhere.
  • Vocational Training: IES centres offer intermediate and advanced vocational cycles.

The best education: growing up on Costa da Morte

Beyond formal schooling, growing up on the Costa da Morte offers an education in values rarely found elsewhere: respect for nature, community spirit, personal autonomy, creativity and a connection with the sea and land that shapes children's character for life.
