How to Get to the Costa da Morte: Transport, Airports, and Road Connections
Your Complete Guide to Reaching the Costa da Morte
One of the most common concerns for those considering a move to the Costa da Morte or investing in a second home is accessibility. Is it well connected? Is it hard to reach? The short answer is no: the Costa da Morte is better connected than many imagine, and communications continue to improve year after year. In this guide, we detail all available transport options.
Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport (SCQ)
Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ) is the main air gateway to the Costa da Morte. It is approximately 70-80 km from the main towns of the region (Cee, Corcubión, Fisterra), which means about a 1-hour drive via the AG-55 highway and AP-9.
Domestic Connections
SCQ offers frequent direct flights to Madrid (Barajas), Barcelona (El Prat), Seville, Málaga, Valencia, Bilbao, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria. Flights to Madrid take approximately 1 hour, with multiple airlines (Iberia, Ryanair, Vueling) and prices from €25-40 if booked in advance.
International Connections
Santiago Airport has direct flights to numerous European destinations: London (Stansted and Gatwick), Frankfurt, Paris (Beauvais and Charles de Gaulle), Zurich, Brussels, Amsterdam, Milan, Rome, Dublin, and Lisbon, among others. Low-cost airlines like Ryanair, easyJet, and Vueling maintain very competitive prices.
For international residents, this means you can fly directly from your home country without going through Madrid or Barcelona. A direct London-Santiago flight costs from €30-60 with Ryanair, and Frankfurt-Santiago from €40-80.
Getting from the Airport to the Costa da Morte
- Rental car: Companies like Avis, Hertz, Europcar, and Goldcar have counters at the terminal. ~1 hour drive via highway.
- Taxi/private transfer: Approximately €100-130 to Cee or Fisterra. Bookable transfer services online.
- Monbus: Santiago - Cee - Fisterra line, with several daily departures. Price ~€8-12 per trip.
A Coruña-Alvedro Airport (LCG)
A Coruña Airport (LCG) is an excellent alternative, especially if your destination is in the northern Costa da Morte (Carballo, Malpica, Ponteceso). It is about 90-100 km from Cee but closer to northern municipalities (~40-50 km from Malpica).
LCG offers direct flights to Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, and Lisbon. Although it has fewer international flights than SCQ, it's very convenient for domestic connections. A Coruña-Madrid flights take 1 hour with similar prices.
Distances from LCG
- To Carballo: 45 km (~40 min)
- To Malpica: 50 km (~45 min)
- To Cee: 90 km (~1h 15 min)
- To Fisterra: 110 km (~1h 30 min)
- To Muxía: 100 km (~1h 20 min)
Driving from Madrid
The road route from Madrid to the Costa da Morte has improved significantly in recent years. The journey is approximately 590-620 km and can be done in about 5.5 to 6 hours using highways for almost the entire route.
Recommended Route
- Madrid → A-6 (Villalba-Adanero highway) → AP-6 (Guadarrama tunnel, toll) → A-6 to Benavente
- Benavente → A-52 (Rías Bajas highway) to Ourense
- Ourense → AG-53 (highway) to Santiago de Compostela
- Santiago → AP-9 (Atlantic highway) to Bertamiráns → AG-55 (highway) to Cee/Corcubión
Toll costs: Guadarrama tunnel costs approximately €8.50. AP-9 has variable toll sections (€2-5 per section). Total toll costs run about €15-25 per trip.
Fuel costs: For a diesel car, the round-trip cost is approximately €70-90. For petrol, €80-110. The route is very efficient thanks to the highways.
Recommended Stops
If you want to make the trip in two days, excellent stops include Medina del Campo, Zamora, Puebla de Sanabria (with the beautiful Sanabria Lake), and Ourense (famous for its thermal baths). Sanabria Lake, 3 hours from Madrid, is a spectacular natural spot and a good halfway point.
AG-55 Highway: The Major Communication Improvement
The AG-55 highway (A Coruña - Carballo - Cee) is the backbone of Costa da Morte communications. This project has radically transformed the region's accessibility:
- A Coruña - Carballo section: Completed and in service. Reduces travel time to 35 minutes.
- Carballo - Cee section: In advanced execution. Most of it is already operational, with some sections in final construction phase.
- Cee - Fisterra section: In planning and study. Full completion expected in the coming years.
The AG-55 has reduced travel time from A Coruña and Santiago to the Costa da Morte by 30-40% compared to the old county roads. This means not only convenience but also increased property values and greater viability for permanent residence.
Bus Services: Monbus
Monbus is the main public transport operator on the Costa da Morte. Its services cover basic transport needs for both residents and visitors.
Main Lines
- Santiago - Cee - Fisterra: 3-4 daily services each direction. Duration ~2 hours. Price ~€8-12.
- A Coruña - Carballo - Cee: 2-3 daily services. Duration ~2 hours. Price ~€10-14.
- Cee - Corcubión - Fisterra: Frequent local service. Price ~€2-4.
- Cee - Muxía: 1-2 daily services. Price ~€4-6.
- Santiago - Muxía - Fisterra: Tourist service with stops at points of interest.
Monbus buses are modern, comfortable, and many routes have WiFi. For residents who don't need a car daily, the bus is a viable alternative for trips to Santiago (specialized medical visits, shopping, administrative errands).
Rail Connections: Train and AVE
Although the Costa da Morte doesn't have its own train station, Galicia's rail connections have improved substantially:
- AVE Madrid - Santiago: Since the arrival of the AVE in 2024, the Madrid-Santiago journey takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. This has transformed Galicia's connection with the capital.
- AVE Madrid - A Coruña: About 2 hours and 45 minutes.
- Train A Coruña - Santiago: Commuter and medium distance, 30-45 minutes.
The AVE Madrid-Santiago + Monbus Santiago-Costa da Morte combination allows the complete journey from Madrid in about 4-5 hours, a comfortable and economical alternative to driving.
Ferry Connections
A Coruña port and Vigo port offer interesting maritime connections:
- Ferry A Coruña - Cíes Islands: Seasonal services (spring-summer) to visit the Atlantic Islands National Park.
- Ferry Vigo - Cíes / Ons Islands: More frequent, departing from Vigo.
- Ferry Brittany (France) - Gijón / Santander: Brittany Ferries operates routes from Roscoff and Portsmouth to northern Spain. From Gijón, it's about 3 hours by highway to the Costa da Morte.
For those coming from the UK or France with their own vehicle, the ferry is an excellent alternative to flying. Prices vary by season, but a return car + 2 passengers Portsmouth-Santander costs from €250-400.
Getting Around the Costa da Morte
Once on the Costa da Morte, the car is the primary mode of transport. Distances between main towns are short:
- Cee - Corcubión: 3 km (5 minutes)
- Cee - Fisterra: 25 km (25 minutes)
- Cee - Muxía: 35 km (35 minutes)
- Cee - Camariñas: 30 km (30 minutes)
- Cee - Vimianzo: 20 km (20 minutes)
- Cee - Santiago: 75 km (1 hour via highway)
- Cee - A Coruña: 80 km (1 hour via highway)
County roads are in good condition and offer spectacular scenery. Driving on the Costa da Morte is an experience in itself, with views of the Atlantic Ocean, cliffs, and small stone bridges.
Parking
Unlike big cities, parking on the Costa da Morte is free and abundant in virtually all municipalities. There are no parking meters, blue zones, or the pressure of finding a spot that you suffer in Madrid or Barcelona. In Fisterra during summer months, there may be some difficulty near the center, but there are always options within a few minutes' walk.
If you buy a property with a garage or parking space, you won't have that extra expense that costs €100-200/month in cities.
Practical Tips for New Residents
- A car is recommended: Although buses cover basic needs, having your own vehicle gives you total freedom to explore the region's beaches, restaurants, and trails.
- Electric second car: More residents are opting for a small electric car for short trips. There are charging points in Cee, Fisterra, and other municipalities.
- Bicycle: For short distances in urban areas (Cee, Corcubión), the bicycle is perfect. The terrain is relatively flat in populated areas.
- Galician license plates: If you move, you can transfer your vehicle to the A Coruña Traffic Office for Galician plates. Simple process.
- Rental car for visits: If you come to view properties, renting a car at Santiago Airport is the most practical option. From €25-30/day.
The Future of Communications
Costa da Morte's infrastructure is continuously improving. Beyond the completion of the AG-55, there are projects underway to improve secondary roads, expand bus services, and enhance Santiago Airport with new international routes. The arrival of the AVE in Galicia has been a before-and-after moment for the entire region's connectivity.
These improvements not only make life easier for residents but also increase property values in the medium and long term. Investing now in the Costa da Morte means betting on an area in full revaluation thanks to its infrastructure.
